Restaurants and Nightlife
When you get tired of negotiating the tight alleys and streets of the old city, or when you saw enough museums about pirates for the day, the tourist can happily relax after a good day’s hard work. So you will be free to simply go out and test the modern side of Saint-Malo, get a tasty meal at one of the many restaurants, sip a coffee or a drink at a bar or café, and when the sun sets you can forsake the pleasures of a good night’s sleep and investigate the nightlife side of this French port city.
Saint Malo Restaurants
- Le Relais Gourmand O. Roellinger
Address: 1 rue Duguesclin
Open hours: Thurs-Mon noon-1:30pm and 7:30-9pm
Prices: Main courses 54€-148€; fixed-price menu 112€-150€
General info: You’ll find this elite establishment on the western flank of the Mont St-Michel Bay, 16 km from St-Malo. The ambience is very relaxing, with a domed conservatory opening towards a garden and a duck pond. The best items on the menu include: brochettes of sweetbreads with laurel, a light cream-of-coconut soup studded with crayfish or an autumn stew of oysters and foie gras. In case you’re wondering, the gastronomical style of the place is Breton with a tendency towards seafood.
- A la Duchesse Anne
Address: 5 place Guy-La-Chambre
Open hours: May-Nov Thurs-Tues 12:15-2pm and 7:15-9:30pm
Prices: Main courses 20€-48€
General info: This restaurant stands on the ramparts, and the dishes are just as great as the location. The best things on menus here are: fish soup with chunks of fresh seafood, spiced in an unforgettable manner; grilled turbot with beurre blanc; Cancale oysters; and let us not forget the great grilled lobster. As you can see, the cuisine is Traditional French.
- Le Chalut
Address: 8 rue de la Corne-de-Cerf
Open hours: Wed-Sun noon-1:30pm and 7-9:30pm
Prices: Main courses 20€-24€ ($26-$31); fixed-price menu 32€-48€
General info: Saint-Malo is full of seafood restaurants, but few of them are as good as this one. Seek the menu for proof: verify the validity of the tart with layers of salmon and scallops with lemon juice or you can interrogate the sea bass with sherry sauce and braised endive.
- Petit Crêpier
Address: Rue Ste Barbe
Prices: average course: €10
General info: True to the name, this restaurant is small and offers the classical crepes, but their daily selection of seafood galettes is a cut above the pack, indeed.
- Captain-Ice
Address: Rue Jacques Cartier, Intra-Muros
General info: This may well be the best ice cream place in town. Try Amour de Glace (Love of Ice cream) for something really yummy. Prices are slightly high, but you get big quantities and very high quality!
Saint-Malo Nightlife
- Saint-Malo Casino
Address: 2 chaussée du Sillon
General info: If you feel up for an evening of gambling, this establishment will do quite well indeed. Plus, you can also have dinner here, as well, sometimes while witnessing a live music show. If you’re a man, don’t come here without a jacket.
- L’Escalier
Address: La Buzardière
Open hours: Thursday through Saturday from 11:30pm to 4am
Prices: 8€ to 10€
General info: In case a day full of sightseeing hasn’t worn you out, consider an evening or night of dancing. This club is in the countryside though, at 5 km from town.
- Number One
Address: at Pleurtuit, on the outskirts of St. Malo
Open hours: Friday and Saturday nights,
Prices: 10€ cover, with the first drink included
General info: Saint-Malo’s strong point isn’t its discos, but if you don’t want to go all the way to Rennes, you might as well try the best there is in the area. The Number One isn’t bad at all – it’s got just what a disco needs: a bar, a dance floor, and a revolving series of lights à la 1980s.
- Le O’Flaherty’s
Address: 18 rue des Cordiers
General info: A classical Irish pub with an interesting French spicing, this place is one of the ideal spots in Saint Malo for a night of discourse over one or more glasses of whiskey.
