About Saint Malo
Believe it or not, Saint Malo was once an infamous base of pirates (corsairs), heavily fortified against Norman (or English) attack. With a background like that, there’s no wonder today’s Saint-Malo is one of the top tourist attractions in Brittany.
The main highlight is the ancient walled city (“intramuros”), almost entirely destroyed in World War II, but eventually rebuilt. The tour buses and tourists swarming the narrow streets is a common image here. The modern towns of Saint-Servan and Parame are just outside the walls. Inhabitants of Saint-Malo are called Malouins.
